Terms of Use

1. Who we are and what Mate is

Mate is a marriage introduction service and community organisation. We host live, in person events for Muslim families across the United States and Canada, and we run a members app that supports those events. Membership exists for marriage only. There are no casual or recreational features, and there is no chat inside the app.

We are not matchmakers and we do not arrange marriages. We verify and admit members, we host events, and we make introductions possible. What happens after that is between you, the other person, and your families.

2. Who may join

• You must be 18 or over. We verify this from a government issued ID.
• You must be single and seeking marriage. Mate is not for people who are married, or who are looking for anything other than marriage.
• You must live in the United States or Canada.
• You must be legally able to enter this agreement, and not barred from our service under any applicable law.
• One account per person. You may not create an account for anyone else, or hold more than one.
• You may not join if we have previously removed you.

3. Your account and verification

Membership is not open signup. Every applicant completes an identity check and is then reviewed and approved by a person on our staff. You cannot browse members until that is done.

• You must give true, current and complete information and keep it updated. Misrepresenting your age, marital status, identity or photographs is grounds for immediate removal.
• Verification involves a government issued ID and a photograph of your face, including a biometric liveness check. Our Privacy Policy explains exactly what happens to that data, and you will be asked to consent separately.
• We may obtain a background check, with your written authorisation, as described in the Privacy Policy.
• You are responsible for keeping your sign in credentials secure and for everything done through your account.
• Approval is at our discretion. We may decline any application, and we are not obliged to give reasons, except where the law requires it.

6. Refunds and cancellation

• Subscriptions bought through the App Store are refunded by Apple, not by us. Request a refund through Apple. We cannot process it for you.
• Event tickets are non refundable. Catering, venue and staffing are committed ahead of each event, so we cannot refund a ticket if you are unable to attend. The only exception is in section 5: if we cancel an event, you may choose a full refund or a credit towards a future one.
• If we remove you for breaching these terms, fees are not refunded.
• You may delete your account at any time in the app under Profile, Settings, Delete Account.

7. How connections work

• There is no chat, inbox or direct message inside Mate. The app has no messaging feature.
• You may send a connection request. If the other member accepts, you each receive the other's contact details and continue the conversation directly, with families involved as you choose.
• Your phone number and email are never shared before you accept.
• You may hold a limited number of active connections at a time. The current limit is shown in the app.
• Lock in lets two members commit to focusing on each other. While locked in, both directories close, other connections end, and no new requests reach either of you. Either person may unlock.
• You are responsible for how you behave once contact details are shared. Treat other people's contact details as confidential and never pass them on.

8. Your content

You keep ownership of your photographs, profile text and answers. You grant Mate a non exclusive, worldwide, royalty free licence to host, store, reproduce and display that content solely to operate the service: showing your profile to other members, printing your name tag, and running our events. This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies we must keep as described in the Privacy Policy.

• You must have the right to everything you upload, and photographs must be of you, recent, and must not include other identifiable people without their agreement.
• Photographs are reviewed, automatically and by our team, and we may remove anything that breaks these terms.
• We will not use your photographs in advertising or marketing without asking you first.
• The Mate name, logo, app and website are ours. You may not copy, scrape, reverse engineer or resell any part of them.

9. Rules of conduct

We have zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive behaviour. You must not:

• Misrepresent your identity, age, marital status or photographs.
• Use Mate for anything other than seeking marriage, including soliciting, advertising, recruiting or fundraising.
• Harass, threaten, stalk, intimidate or abuse anyone, in the app, at an event, or after contact details are shared.
• Post or send anything sexually explicit, hateful, violent, discriminatory or unlawful.
• Ask another member for money, or attempt any financial scam. Report anyone who asks you for money.
• Share another member's photographs, contact details or private information with anyone.
• Create multiple accounts, or return after removal.
• Use bots, scrapers or automated tools, or try to access parts of our systems you are not entitled to.
• Behave at an event in a way that is unsafe, disrespectful or contrary to the conduct expected of guests.

You can report or block any member from their profile. We act on reports, typically within 24 hours, and removals are permanent. See our Community Guidelines for the detail.

10. Safety, and the limits of verification

Read this part carefully

Every member completes a government ID and liveness check and is approved by a person on our staff. That is a genuine, meaningful safeguard, and it is more than most services do.

It is not a guarantee. Verifying that someone is who they say they are tells you nothing about their character, their honesty about their circumstances, or their intentions. A background check reduces risk; it does not remove it. Mate does not endorse, recommend or vouch for any member.

You are responsible for your own safety and your own decisions. Take the ordinary precautions you would with anyone you do not know: involve your family, meet in public at first, tell someone where you are going, and do not send money to anyone, for any reason, ever.

11. Wedding services directory

We list wedding businesses our team has vetted: venues, caterers, photographers, planners and others. Vendors cannot list themselves.

• We are not a party to any agreement between you and a vendor. You contract with them directly, and payment, delivery, quality and disputes are between you and them.
• Vetting means we have checked a business and, in many cases, worked with them. It is not a warranty of their work, and it does not make us responsible for it.
• No payment for these real world services is taken in the app.

12. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or permanently remove your account, with or without notice, if you breach these terms, if we believe you pose a risk to another member, if information you gave us is untrue, or if we are required to by law. Where it is safe and lawful to do so, we will tell you why.

You may close your account at any time. Sections 8, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 17 survive termination.

13. Disclaimers

MATE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE". TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR FREE, THAT ANY MEMBER IS SUITABLE FOR YOU, OR THAT USING MATE WILL RESULT IN A MARRIAGE, AN INTRODUCTION OR ANY OTHER OUTCOME.

14. Limitation of liability and indemnity

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, MATE AND ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES AND VOLUNTEERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, DATA OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE OR YOUR INTERACTIONS WITH ANY MEMBER OR VENDOR, WHETHER OR NOT WE WERE ADVISED SUCH DAMAGES WERE POSSIBLE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR ONE HUNDRED US DOLLARS.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain damages. Where that is so, the above applies to the fullest extent permitted, and nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

You agree to indemnify Mate against claims, losses and reasonable legal costs arising from your breach of these terms, your content, or your conduct towards another member or a vendor.

15. Disputes, arbitration and class action waiver

Talk to us first. Most problems are solved quickly. Email support@matematrimony.com and give us 30 days to resolve it before starting formal proceedings.

IF WE CANNOT RESOLVE IT, YOU AND MATE AGREE THAT ANY DISPUTE ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE WILL BE RESOLVED BY BINDING INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATION ADMINISTERED BY THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION UNDER ITS CONSUMER ARBITRATION RULES, AND NOT IN COURT, EXCEPT THAT EITHER PARTY MAY BRING AN INDIVIDUAL CLAIM IN SMALL CLAIMS COURT.

YOU AND MATE EACH WAIVE THE RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL AND THE RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS, COLLECTIVE OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION. THE ARBITRATOR MAY NOT CONSOLIDATE CLAIMS OR PRESIDE OVER ANY FORM OF CLASS PROCEEDING.

How to opt out of arbitration

You may opt out of this arbitration agreement within 30 days of first accepting these terms, by emailing support@matematrimony.com with the subject "Arbitration Opt Out" and your name and account email. Opting out costs nothing, does not affect your membership, and leaves the rest of these terms in force.

If the class action waiver is found unenforceable, the whole of this section 15 is void and disputes proceed in court. Arbitration takes place in Travis County, Texas, or by video or telephone if you prefer, and may be conducted on documents alone.

17. General

• Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to conflict of law rules. Subject to section 15, the courts of Travis County, Texas have exclusive jurisdiction.
• Changes. We may update these terms. If a change is material we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Mate after that means you accept the change. If you do not, close your account.
• Severability. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in force.
• No waiver. If we do not enforce a provision, that is not a waiver of it.
• Assignment. You may not assign these terms. We may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
• Entire agreement. These terms, the Privacy Policy, the Community Guidelines, and the purchase screens in the app are the entire agreement between you and Mate.
